Antibiotic treatment is available in two forms—as an oral medication or topical gel or strip.
Oral medications can have an effect on the body as a whole and are less commonly prescribed than gels or strips. They include:

- Macrolide antibiotics
- Tetracycline antibiotic
A topical gel or strip delivers antibiotics to the surface of the gums so that the rest of the body is not affected. These treatments are commonly applied after a scaling and root planing procedure and can include:
