If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, we may recommend customized antibiotic treatment to effectively manage your condition and preserve your smile. Antibiotic treatment can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other procedures.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum tissue that results in gum inflammation and tooth loss. While there is no cure for periodontal disease, it can be controlled by reducing the bacteria in your smile. Dr. Roderick Spencer may perform an antibiotic treatment before or after another periodontal procedure, such as scaling and root planing, surgery, or curettage.

Antibiotic treatment is available in two forms—as an oral medication or topical gel or strip.

Oral medications can have an effect on the body as a whole and are less commonly prescribed than gels or strips. They include:

  • Metronidazole
  • Macrolide antibiotics
  • Tetracycline antibiotic

A topical gel or strip delivers antibiotics to the surface of the gums so that the rest of the body is not affected. These treatments are commonly applied after a scaling and root planing procedure and can include:

  • Arestin®
  • PerioChip®
  • Elyzol®
  • Atridox®
  • Actisite®

Our dentist will select an antibiotic treatment based on your oral health needs. If you have any questions about receiving antibiotic treatment in Bozeman, Montana, please feel free to contact our office at 406-602-4100 today.
