Whitening Your Teeth

Posted .

If you take a look at the dental aisle of your grocery or drugstore, you will see plenty of toothpastes, mouthwashes, kits and strips promising to give you brighter and whiter teeth. While there are no shortage of whitening products, not all of them may be suitable for you, and not all of them may work the way they have been advertised. If you have had dental work done, whitening products will not work on your veneers or bridges.

Before you change, or add anything regarding your dental hygiene routine, you should schedule an appointment to discuss your needs with our dentist, Dr. Roderick Spencer.

At Suite Dental, we can brighten your teeth and return the shine to your smile. However, after that, there are some things that you can do to keep your teeth bright.

If you smoke or use tobacco, now would be a great time to quit. Tobacco use is the cause of a number of health problems, and tobacco can stain your teeth. Nicotine will turn your teeth yellow. Dark colored foods and drinks will stain your teeth. Red wine will darken your smile, but did you know that the acids in white wine can also discolor your teeth? When enjoying wine, coffee or tea, or other dark drinks, remember to brush afterward, and to have a glass of water.

The acids present in tomatoes, along with their red color means that pasta sauce will cling to your teeth and darken them. Before you enjoy your meal, have a salad made up of leafy green vegetables, which will cover your teeth in a protective film. Berries are great for a snack or a healthy dessert, but enjoy a glass of water when you are done.

Hard cheese will not only provide you with calcium, but will also scrub the stains from your teeth. Apples, celery and other crunchy fruits and vegetables stimulate the production of saliva in your mouth which will help wash away the stains and neutralize food bacteria.
